CREATIVE PLAY STATION

A Play-Based Learning Space for Children & Families
Learn, Play, and Grow — in a safe and engaging environment.

Creative Play Station at Pustaka KL @ Bandar Baru Sentul is an informal learning space designed for children to explore the world through interactive, creative, and meaningful play experiences with their families.

Reimagining a Library: A Story of Play, Learning, and Community

In the heart of Bandar Baru Sentul, a simple question sparked a powerful transformation: What if a library could become more than just a place for books? For many urban children, safe and meaningful spaces to play, explore, and learn are limited. At the same time, libraries are evolving — no longer just quiet reading spaces, but dynamic community hubs that respond to real societal needs.

Recognizing this gap, Kuala Lumpur Library (PKL), together with our strategic partners, YTL Foundation & Toys Library Malaysia reimagined a small 20x20 ft space into something much bigger in purpose — the Creative Play Station. This was not just about adding toys into a library. It was about redefining learning. Inside this space, children do not sit still — they build, imagine, collaborate, and explore. Blocks become cities. Games become lessons. Play becomes a language of learning. Around them, parents are no longer just observers, but active participants — guiding, bonding, and learning together. Librarians, too, take on a new role — not only as custodians of knowledge, but as facilitators of experience. The impact was immediate and meaningful. Children returned — not just once, but repeatedly. Parents became more engaged. The library became alive with interaction, laughter, and connection.

In just six months:

  • Over 1,450 child visits were recorded
  • More than 220 parents and caregivers participated
  • Children’s library membership increased by 28%
  • And 85% of parents reported stronger engagement with the library

But beyond the numbers, something deeper happened. The library became a space where:

  • learning feels natural
  • families grow closer
  • communities feel connected

Creative Play Station proves that impactful change does not require large spaces or complex systems. With the right intention, even a small area can create meaningful social transformation. Today, this initiative stands as a scalable model — one that can be replicated in other urban libraries, bringing the same sense of joy, learning, and belonging to more communities. Because in the end, when children play — they learn. And when families learn together — communities grow stronger

Thank you.

Strategic Impact Summary: 6-Month Pilot Programme

This pilot demonstrates a highly effective, community-centered library intervention that successfully converts access into measurable social outcomes.

1. Strong Reach & Engagement

Within just six months, the programme achieved:

  • 1,450 child visits
  • 220 parents and caregivers actively involved

➡️ This indicates not only high utilization, but also a family-based engagement model, which is critical for sustainable literacy development.

2. Measurable Behavioural Change

  • +28% increase in children’s library membership
  • 85% of parents report improved child engagement

➡️ These are not passive metrics — they reflect real shifts in behavior, habit formation, and perception of libraries as relevant spaces.

3. Multi-Dimensional Social Outcomes

The programme delivers impact across four key domains:

  • Early Learning Activation
Increased participation in developmental activities at a crucial age
  • Family Bonding Strengthened
Libraries repositioned as shared learning spaces, not just book repositories
  • Community Engagement Elevated
Higher repeat visits and stronger connection between families and public institutions
  • Positive Child Development
Observable improvements in social and behavioral outcomes

4. Strategic Value Proposition

This is not just a programme — it is a replicable model with clear strategic advantages:

  • Inclusive by design → Reaches diverse age and cultural groups
  • Low-barrier, high-return → Simple interventions yield strong outcomes
  • Scalable framework → Ready for expansion across urban libraries
  • Ecosystem-driven → Integrates children, parents, and community

5. Key Strategic Insight

➡️ Access alone does not create impact — structured engagement does.

This pilot proves that when libraries:

  • Remove barriers
  • Activate families
  • Provide meaningful interactions

They can transition from service providers → community development hubs.

Conclusion

This initiative successfully transforms the library into a catalyst for early childhood development, family literacy, and community cohesion, with clear evidence of scalability and long-term societal value.
